The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12 flattened much of the capital of Port-au-Price and surrounding areas, and in the process destroying critical pieces of the country's infrastructure. One of the areas that suffered the most was Haiti's telecommunications system, making it difficult to coordinate relief efforts and begin the long road back.
As the leading provider of assured communications systems, Harris Corporation has been working closely with U.S. and international customers since the earthquake to provide technology and technical expertise that will support military, public safety and relief agencies in conducting their missions.
In addition to sending a team of communications experts, Harris is also fielding and fulfilling requests for highly reliable, secure communications equipment that can fill the void in areas without working infrastructure. This equipment is being provided through U.S. and international militaries, federal agencies and relief agencies such as CHF International.
In addition to our equipment and people, the corporation is also matching donations Harris employees make to the American Red Cross International Relief Fund for Haiti. And the corporation has made a direct donation to earthquake relief through organizations in Miami-Dade County.
The devastating scenes from Haiti have touched us all. As the recovery effort unfolds in the weeks and months ahead, Harris is prepared to provide assistance where it is needed.
